Pathologists are more accurate and reproducible in mitotic scoring of invasive breast carcinoma with AI assistance

In a recent publication in Diagnostics, French investigators studied a mitosis detection AI-based algorithm from Primaa in invasive breast carcinoma that indicates hotspots and mitotic figures, and computes mitotic scores. This retrospective study of 50 cases compares the mitotic scoring of two junior pathologists, with and without AI mitotic counting software assistance. An expert consensus mitotic score provided the ground truth. Accuracy in mitotic scoring significantly increased (62% to 76% and 64% to 78% for pathologists 1 and 2, respectively), and reproducibility of both scoring and mitotic counting also increased significantly.
