Blackford finds a new home: Sopris Capital acquires the imaging AI platform from Bayer

US investment firm Sopris Capital has acquired Blackford Analysis from Bayer. Blackford, founded in Edinburgh in 2010, runs one of the best-known vendor-neutral AI platforms in radiology, giving hospitals access to more than 130 AI applications from over 45 vendors through a single integration.

The deal follows Bayer’s decision to step away from the radiology AI platform market, discontinuing both its Calantic platform (which was built on Blackford’s technology) and Blackford’s own services. Under its new owner, Blackford will remain a separate company with operations in Scotland and the US, and says existing customers and partners will continue to be supported.

Sopris also plans to combine Blackford with Azra AI, another company in its portfolio. Azra AI focuses on identifying patients who need follow-up, particularly in cancer care, and guiding them through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship based on EHR data. No concrete product integrations or timelines have been announced yet.

What's our view on it?

We’re glad to see Blackford find a new home. Platforms like this play an important role in helping hospitals adopt AI at scale, and its future had been uncertain since Bayer’s exit.

The combination with Azra AI is an interesting one. Blackford works with imaging, while Azra AI works with clinical records and patient data. Bringing those together points toward multimodal AI: looking beyond individual departments and data types toward a more complete picture of the patient, and eventually more predictive care. That’s a direction we see real potential in, and we’ll be following how it develops.

At the same time, with ownership moving to the US and the focus clearly on the US market, it’s another reminder that Europe's health AI infrastructure sovereignty is not a given.
